Accident or crash
Anyone hurt or in danger? Call 000 now.
- Pull over somewhere safe if you can, and put your hazards on.
- Check for injuries. Only help if it's safe to.
- Keep everyone clear of traffic, fuel and fire risk.
- Swap details with the other driver: name, number, rego, insurer.
- Photograph everything: the scene, vehicles, trailer and damage.
- Report to police if anyone's hurt or there's major damage. Don't admit fault.
Broke down
Blocking traffic or in a dangerous spot? Call 000.
- Indicate, pull as far left as you can, hazards on.
- Get out only if it's safe. Stand well clear of traffic, behind a barrier if there is one.
- Don't attempt repairs anywhere dangerous, like a motorway or blind corner.
- Call your roadside assistance and tell them you're towing a hire trailer.
Flat tyre
Don't change a wheel beside traffic. Get safe first.
- Ease off, don't brake hard. Get to a safe, level spot off the road, hazards on.
- Safest option: call roadside or call us, rather than change it yourself.
- Changing it yourself? Only with the right gear, on firm ground, well clear of traffic. Crack the nuts before jacking, fit the spare, tighten in a star pattern.
- Let us know, and report any damage.
Trailer came off
Stay calm. Ease off the accelerator, don't slam the brakes.
- Hold the wheel firm and slow to a gentle, controlled stop.
- Hazards on, and get everyone to a safe spot away from traffic.
- Crash, injury or a big hazard? Call 000.
- Check the towball, coupling, chains and breakaway. Don't reattach if anything's damaged.
Fire or smoke
Fire, smoke or a fuel leak? Get everyone away and call 000.
- Stop, engine off, and move everyone well clear.
- Only use an extinguisher if it's a small fire and safe to, aim at the base.
- Don't open the trailer if there's heavy smoke.
- Once 000's called and you're safe, let us know.
Someone's hurt
Serious injury, chest pain, trouble breathing or a suspected spinal injury? Call 000 now.
- Stop safely, hazards on, keep clear of traffic.
- Only give first aid or CPR if you're trained and it's safe.
- Don't move someone with a suspected neck, head or spinal injury unless they're in immediate danger.
- When it's safe, let us know.
